Despite the illusion of meritocracy, the reality of the working world is that it isn’t what you know, but who you know. Possessing valued skills is only one step in achieving success, as your abilities hold little power without anyone to observe them, and to vouch for you. In order for this to happen, it is integral to amass a wide network.
This unfortunately means that in order for anyone to succeed in the workforce, they must socialize with others at every given opportunity. Finding a small group of close friends is only the start; your network should be comprised of a wide variety of people, some of whom you may not find particularly likeable, all in order to ensure that you have as many possible opportunities to achieve success. Professors, friends of friends, and classmates are all useful to have as references. Though it is beneficial to have them be involved in the field of your choosing, understand that your goals may change, in which case, having people from many different walks of life can allow you to accomplish dreams that you didn’t even know you had.
The job market today is facing a crisis of paradoxes; there aren’t enough employees to hire, but at the same time, there aren’t enough jobs for newcomers to the workforce. It is more important now than ever to have a leg up on your competition. It isn’t enough to simply possess a degree, as the market has already been saturated with them, and as a result, standards have been raised. Having tangible experience, and someone who can attest to it, will help you stand out among other applicants.
