New Year, New Me: Setting Goals and Resolutions

We've all experienced it – the onset of a new year prompts us to make promises to ourselves, whether committing to more exercise, alleviating stress, or enhancing our mental well-being. However, like many goal-setters, you might discover that more often than not, those resolutions end up neglected or completely forgotten. Experiencing the failure of your goals can be highly frustrating and demoralizing. Yet it’s important to set goals, big or small, to keep us motivated and focused on our well-being and future.

While setting goals doesn't require the advent of a new year, it's crucial to understand the significant benefits of goal setting. Establishing goals enables us to envision an idealized version of our lives. Each goal is crafted and customized to fit the unique aspirations of individuals striving to improve themselves and their lives. Setting goals enables us to concentrate and structure our time productively for self-improvement.

A common formula for setting and pursuing goals is through what is known as S.M.A.R.T. goals. In short, your goal should be:

(Example Goal: Be healthier.)

Specific: Make your goal clearly defined (Ex. Incorporate vegetables into my meals.)

Measurable: Set a measurable unit for your goal. (Ex. Eat 2 cups of vegetables every day.)

Attainable: Set limits so that your goal is manageable. (Ex. Slowly incorporate and build up healthy eating habits.)

Relevant: The goal is something you want. (Ex. Keep your body healthy.)

Time-bound: Set a time limit for your goal! (Ex. I will incorporate a vegetable into my dinner every night.)
