Work Besties: Friendships in the Workplace

A ‘work bestie’ is someone you would consider a close friend at your workplace. These relationships share a strong bond and often confide in about work-related matters. These friends are also someone you can trust and rely on for support in (and sometimes out) the professional environment.

Having a work bestie can really make a difference on the job! Building friendships in the workplace can create a solid support network, which is especially crucial when the shift gets busy or stressful. Building a strong bond with a work bestie helps individuals integrate into the work culture and combat imposter syndrome. This supportive relationship fosters belonging and eases the integration into the organization. Overall, there is evidence to suggest that nurturing close workplace friendships positively impacts job satisfaction and performance, while lowering burnout (Ducharme, 2023)!

Building friendships in the workplace can initially feel overwhelming, but it is certainly attainable with effort and openness. It is essential to maintain professionalism in these relationships while carrying out job responsibilities. Demonstrating a positive attitude aligns with the professional standards expected in most workplaces. Additionally, establishing communication channels such as group chats or exchanging contact information facilitates the development of friendships beyond the confines of work hours, enhancing accessibility and strengthening bonds among colleagues.
